Just ordered a print of your "Kathryn Janeway: Our Lady of Determination" from society 6! I grew up watching Voyager and Janeway has been a favourite inspirational character of mine since then. The past couple of years have been very difficult for me, having suffered a brain injury and the death of a parent. I'm now about to start a demanding teacher-training course. Gonna have your art on my wall to remind me every day that, with determination, I can do it. Thank you for your wonderful work :)

As the Strong Female Characters series circulates through the internet I’m frequently seeing commentary pointing out that the majority of the characters in the series are white heteronormative women. This is not lost on me. I know that the current lineup is extremely whitewashed and I don’t want it to be that way. When I started this series and I was making lists of strong female characters I had been exposed to, it became increasingly difficult to name women of color or non-heterosexual presenting women who have been represented positively in media and represent women positively.

I want this series to be more inclusive and representative of women. If you know of any television shows, movies, webseries or anything that contains characters fitting the following guidelines who would be considered women of color or non-heterosexual please send them to me!

Here are my guidelines for who I consider for the series.

The character portrays a positive character attribute.
The character is portrayed as a complicated, flawed, and compelling human being.
The character is a woman (open to interpretation RE: what is gender?)

What’s also really open to interpretation is what makes a character strong. I would love to hear your opinion.

Birthday! I spent the majority of the day at work but came home to some nice surprises. Boyfriend Brandon gave me a framed Zoe print to complete the collection, a marimo, and a Star Trek (DS9/Voyager) comm badge (with the promise of going to the Star Trek convention in November.) My beautiful roommate and artiste Natasha made me two bitchin paintings. And Brandon’s mother sent a very fashionable party hat, pin the tail on the donkey, and some amazing cookies. I feel very lucky to live with such wonderful people.

I’m going to get drunk with my cats now. Wooooo ~~Spring Break~~ Birthday!
